While perusing the web for dessert recipes (for the upcoming July 4th holiday), I stumbled across Playing With Sugar’s post about chocolate covered pretzels. The themed pretzels looked appropriately festive and well, it seemed pretty easy to make also!
I decided to make a batch for a coworker’s going-away get together earlier this afternoon. Figured if I could manage to fumble through it, I could re-make them again this weekend for my brother’s barbecue!
Laying out all the ingredients. Wax paper, array of sprinkles (red white & blue, nuts, and mini round sprinkles), two bars of chocolate (White & German Sweet Chocolate), and a bag of Snyder’s Pretzel Rods that I lovingly picked out — yes, indeed I spent a few minutes in the snack aisle fondling each bag to make sure I was getting the bag with least breakage!

An upclose shot of the chocolate bars. They were pretty easy to melt, although the white chocolate was a little more difficult to keep smooth. Ehh… cuz it’s not really chocolate…! I don’t have a double boiler, so I simply melted it in a small microwaveable bowl.

The first set of rods!

The regular chocolate w/ nuts:

Nuts Nuts Nuts!

And the last batch…

I’m so silly, but after I was done dipping and sprinkling, I simply let the rods sit out on the wax paper for another hour thinking the chocolate would “set” this way. Um NO! Duh, it took that full hour before dawning on me that I needed to put them away in the fridge!!
The pretzel rods did come out very nicely. I tried the white chocolate covered one and thought it was quite yummy. The sweet + salty combination was awesome!
